IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Himalayan States Amid Rising Weather Activity

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several Himalayan states as unstable weather conditions continue to intensify across northern India. The warning comes as western disturbances and pre-monsoon systems trigger rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in many hill regions.

According to IMD forecasts, states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the Jammu-Kashmir region are expected to witness sudden weather changes over the coming days. Meteorologists warned that heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorm activity could affect daily life and travel in vulnerable hill areas.

The weather department said dense cloud formations over the Himalayan belt indicate strong thundercloud development capable of producing:

  • heavy rainfall

  • lightning strikes

  • gusty winds

  • localized hailstorms

The current weather activity is reportedly being fueled by the interaction between western disturbances and intense pre-monsoon heat across northern India.

At the same time, several northern plains continue facing severe heatwave conditions, creating a sharp contrast between extreme heat and sudden storm activity. IMD forecasts suggest that some Himalayan regions may receive temporary relief from rising temperatures due to rainfall and cloud cover later this week.

Officials have advised tourists, pilgrims, and local residents in hill states to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to:

  • landslides

  • flash floods

  • slippery roads

  • falling trees

  • lightning incidents

Travel disruptions are also possible in mountainous routes due to intense rainfall and reduced visibility.

Meanwhile, the IMD also noted that the southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly toward Kerala, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in parts of the state in the coming days. Weather experts believe India may witness an active and volatile transition into the monsoon season this year.

The weather department continues to monitor developments closely and has urged citizens to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.
